Extracurricular

Since 2010 I've maintained a glorious white belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) at the relentless and glacial pace of about one lesson per week. Jiu jitsu is a fantastic art. If I had more natural talent or the physical ability to train more, I may have had a black belt by now. These days I study at ostbjj.com (classes at York University's Tait Mackenzie Centre). Another name for the same art is Judo, and I study judo too with the wonderful people at Ronin Judo & Sumo Club.

Since 2010, I have been a student at the Zirger Academy of Martial Arts. It's a multidisciplinary academy that does Bruce Lee's (and Dan Inosanto's) Jeet Kune Do, as well as other Filipino Martial Arts (collectively called JKD/FMA) and the Southeast Asian art of Silat.

From 2000-2010, I was a student of the art of kalaripayatu, from Kerala, India.

I am an advocate of free software, especially in a research and teaching environment but more generally as well. I run Ubuntu on my own computers, and use QGIS and GRASS GIS for research.
